We are Stewards

Nathan Ros

A steward is a person who manages the property, valuables, and possessions of others. To put it in simple terms, a steward is a manager. As Christians we have to understand that all that the Lord has given us does not belong to us, whether it is our family, our monetary possessions, or our life. It belongs to Almighty God. The Bible states it.

Psalm 127:3-5  Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.

Psalm 50:10, 12 For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.

Haggai 2:8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the Lord of hosts.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

We have to understand that our finances are not ours. It belongs to the Lord. We are “managers” and must take care of it as God would want us to.

So many people mistakenly think that what they have is theirs. They might think, “Well I worked hard for this!” “I went to school and studied for this!” “I prepared my life for this!” The Bible simply says in Deuteronomy:

Deuteronomy 8:17-18 And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

We have to remember that God has given us the ability to make wealth! All we have is the Lords. It is not ours personally. We have to care and steward it as God would want us to.

My wife and I have managed four properties for about ten years. Each property has at least four units. Before we began managing, we sat down with the owners to see how they wanted us to manage it. They gave specific instructions on how to collect payments and what to do with the payments monthly. They instructed us on how to deal with tenants, how to handle problems, and how they wanted us to solve problems. We listened intently to these instructions to make sure we represented them well. You see, these are not our properties. They belong to someone else. We are simply managing them as the owners would.  We do not have my own agenda with these properties. We are only doing the wishes that the owners would have us do.

Our stewardship of what God has given us should be the same. The assets that God has given us are not ours, but belong to the Lord. We must do what God wants us to with them. That is why is imperative that we have the mind of the Lord in the area of stewarding our finances. The Bible states in 1 Corinthians 4:2 “Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.” We must be faithful in handling what God has given us.
