Overcoming the Disappointments of Life

Rosalio Campa

Haggai 2:1-9 In the seventh month, in the one and twentieth day of the month, came the word of the Lord by the prophet Haggai, saying, Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying, Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing? Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the Lord; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the Lord, and work: for I am with you, saith the Lord of hosts: According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not. For thus saith the Lord of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the Lord of hosts. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the Lord of hosts. The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the Lord of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the Lord of hosts.

One of the things that all human beings always have in common is disappointment.  And sadly, we will continue to experience it as long as we are alive. Disappointment can be defined as “the loss of an illusion.”

Let me ask you a question: what is the disappointment you experienced that you still cannot overcome and has embittered, imprisoned, and detained you to this day?

Maybe a best friend let you down.
Maybe it was your job.
Maybe it was your own family.
Maybe it was your parents and children.
Maybe you had plans and they were not fulfilled.
Maybe you expected better from life, and now you feel disappointed and even robbed by your circumstances.
Maybe someone who promised to love you, in the end, treated you and your family badly.

There are a lot of things that can lead us to have disillusionments. Although not all disappointments in life are permanent, there are disappointments that, sadly, many have never been able to overcome or forget. Many lives are bitter, sad, imprisoned, full of resentment, and full of hatred because of their disappointments.

Haggai 2:1-9, the text that we read from the Word of God not only teaches us the causes of why we get stuck in disappointments, but also teaches us how to overcome them.

Let me explain what is happening here in this little book of Haggai. After seventy years of exile in Babylon, God has fulfilled His promise, and the people of Israel leave Babylon for Jerusalem to rebuild the temple of God which had been burned and destroyed. But sadly, that task was stopped for sixty years because of the Samaritans who opposed them. God then ordered Haggai to go and encourage the people to finish what they had started: to rebuild the temple and the city of Jerusalem.

The problem we see here in chapter one of Haggai is that the people procrastinated in their work; that is, they left everything for later, because they allowed themselves to be discouraged.

And in chapter two the problem was the negative outlook or mentality that they believed in their minds and hearts—which led them to live lives of disappointment.
There were several reasons why they were totally disillusioned, which mainly had to do with bad memories. They lived disillusioned lives by constantly thinking about the negative, till they forgot the good or the positive. Let’s not forgot the good things God has done in our lives in the past, and the blessings that come our way when we serve the Lord. I’ll close with these verses:

Haggai 2:3-4 Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing? Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the Lord; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the Lord, and work: for I am with you, saith the Lord of hosts:
