God's Provision

Nathan Ros
Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

As children of God we can rest assure that God will take care of us.  The Bible says in Psalm 37:25, “I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.”  Philippians 4:9 says, “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” God is faithful!

In 2 Kings, the Bible gives a story of His faithfulness to a widow. We can learn of God’s promises, power, and provision to His people.

2 Kings 4:1-7 Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the Lord: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen. And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil. Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few. And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full. So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out. And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed. Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.

1. God provides for His obedient children.

2 Kings 4:4 Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the Lord

1 John 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

• If we live by God’s principles, He will always take care of us!

2. God uses what you have to give you more

2 Kings 4:2 And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.

Luke 16:10 He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.

The very little that she had God used to sustain her. God doesn’t need our possessions. He is totally capable of forming something out of nothing. He made the universe in six days out of nothing! God is powerful enough to do the work, but He waits to see what we are willing to do.

3. God blesses when we obey every word, even if it does not make sense

2 Kings 4:3 Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few.

It most likely didn’t make sense for her to do that in her own mind. She might have even questioned it in her heart. Why? How would that help? Imagine what would have happened if she didn’t obey. The answer simply would be, she would have seen God’s provision!

4. God Provision is more then we can ever imagine

2 Kings 4:7 Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.

Because of God’s goodness and the widow’s faith and trust in the Lord, God provided for her. God didn’t just provide for her then but He also allowed her to pay off her debt and have over enough to live. What a great God!
