What Are You Happy About?

Psalm 9:14 That I may shew forth all thy praise in the gates of the daughter of Zion: I will rejoice in thy salvation.
Psalm 13:5 But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation.
Psalm 35:9 And my soul shall be joyful in the LORD: it shall rejoice in his salvation.
Habakkuk 3:18 Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.

There are many ways to find out what a person is really like. One way is to find out what makes them happy, what brings them joy. If you tell me what brings you joy, then I will know who you really are. If you find joy in your marriage, then you will be a good spouse. If you find joy in your children, then you will be a good parent. But the main thing we need to make sure we find joy in is our relationship with the Lord, and in all that He has done with us.

Many Christians struggle with this and seek to find joy in what they have. They measure their joy in the possessions which they have, the toys that they own, or the numbers in their bank account. That never leads to joy; that leads to covetousness. We will never have enough to bring us to joy, and we will always be jealous of what others possess.

Many Christians struggle with this and seek to find joy in who they are. They measure their self-worth by their positions in life and what others think of them. That never leads to joy; that leads to conceit. It’s nothing more than pride, trying to pull ourselves up at the expense of others thinking we are better than others.
Many Christians struggle with this and seek to find joy in what they do. They seek joy and self-worth in doing more than others and being more productive than others. That never leads to joy; that leads to comparison. It is a fruitless measuring stick between one sinful man and another. The mark we are to strive for is not what others have done, so we can beat them out, but to fulfill God’s individual will for my life.

The one place we are to find joy is in our salvation, and in our God the provider of our salvation. That leads us to a godly joy and contentment. Contentment is that place where we realize all we need to be joyful is a right relationship with our God. If God allows us to achieve anything, or provides for us abundantly, that is because of His grace and not on any merit of our own.

So ask yourself this question: What is my joy dependent upon? If it is dependent upon anything other than the Lord Jesus Christ and His salvation, you are headed down the path of covetousness, conceit, and comparison. But it will never lead you to the road of contentment. That only comes as we find our joy in our salvation and the provider of our salvation.

We cannot expect to receive joy if we are going to the wrong places to obtain it. There is only one right place where joy is found.

Psalm 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
