Women and Wine (Being Mindful Men)

Daniel Esposito
Proverbs 31:3-4 “Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings. It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:”

The book of Proverbs is a road map for life provided for a son by his dad. The father teaches his son how to deal with various aspects of life: finances, friendships, work ethic, and his relationship with God. In wisdom, the father teaches his son how to meet each life circumstance from God’s perspective. Living life in this manner will ensure lifelong success!

The father constantly reminds his son to be particularly careful of two things that can potentially cripple a man indefinitely: women and wine! Although very different in nature, women and wine (I would include any alcoholic beverages) have many similarities. Both should be treated with much caution.

THERE ARE GOOD AND BAD WOMEN AND GOOD AND BAD WINE:

God designed grapes and grape juice to be consumed and enjoyed. Grape juice tastes refreshing and has many health benefits. However, there is a point when the grape juice is no longer appropriate to consume. This is at the point of fermentation. (Proverbs 23:31)

God made women to be man’s helpmeet and for the enjoyment of companionship in marriage. A proper marriage relationship is not only deemed as acceptable in Scripture, but is applauded as honorable. Marriage to a godly lady can be one of life’s most joyful escapades. However, the father in Proverbs reminds his son that being hooked up with the wrong kind of woman can bring an irreparable infamy! A close relationship with any lady we aren’t married to is out of bounds for Christian men just like fermented wine! (Proverbs 5:18-21)

BOTH WOMEN AND WINE WILL MAKE YOU DO THINGS YOU OTHERWISE WOULDN’T:

I worked for several nights at a business right next door to a bar. The complete idiocracy performed by the bar frequenters was appalling. Successful, attractive, well-dressed individuals who pull up in flashy cars, were acting like complete fools by the end of the night! Proverbs reminds us that wine is a mocker and giving ourselves to it will rob us of our sanity! (Proverbs 20:1 and 31:5)

In the same way, many successful hard working men, men of character do some of the most foolish things to please women, whom they have no business being around. We find a passage in chapter six of Proverbs that expresses that many strong men are slain by bad ladies! It’s often said when the heart is involved, the head stops working. A good practice would be to avoid spending excessive amounts of time with ladies we aren’t married to. It’s much easier to avoid temptation than to evade it once it’s knocking at our door! (Proverbs 4:14-17)

BOTH WOMEN AND WINE WILL BIND YOU:

The local drunkard never imagined that his first small drink would lead to a wrecked life! The father who got too close to the lady at the office, never imagined his marriage would be ruined by an affair! Some sins start off seemingly small and innocent but lead to fetters stronger and tighter than anyone could have ever imagined! Nothing on this side of eternity is more crippling and binding than women and wine!

Conclusion: Because of the weighty, life-crippling consequences that accompany the wrong women and wine, it is imperative as a Christian man that I avoid them at all cost!
