The Wrong Attitude about Christmas

Luke 2:10-11 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

Christmas is always an exciting time! It is where we get together as a family, fellowship with loved ones, and friends. We give presents, Christmas cards, and most of all we celebrate with lots of food! I believe Christmas is the most awaited time of the year! I always look forward to Christmas time. All the children get excited during this season.  It is a wonderful time to have fellowship, get presents and we get to eat all of our favorite food! (We don’t have to worry about our diet). But if that’s all were looking forward to every year, then we missed the real reason why we celebrate Christmas. The true reason we celebrate Christmas is because of the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ!

But the question is this, if Christmas is the most awaited and most wonderful time of the year, then why are many people including Christians, often say, “It’s not going to be a good Christmas this year?”

I believe the reason is that we have bought into this wrong mindset of what TRUE Christmas is all about.

Here are some of the wrong attitude about Christmas.

1. Christmas is just another holiday.

Luke 2:10-11 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

During the Christmas season, we all get to relax and enjoy some time off. But with a busy holiday schedule, we can easily fall into the world’s trap of treating Christmas as another holiday. We are consumed about planning our vacation and time off. Christmas is not about vacation and relaxation. It is not about celebrating a holiday. It is a VERY special day! Luke 2:11 says “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” When we become caught up with the busyness of the holiday season, instead of focusing on the Reason for the season, Christmas will just be another holiday.

2. Christmas is all about getting.

Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son…

One of the things that we all enjoy about Christmas is the aspect of gift giving. Even as a child we have all experienced and are looking forward to receiving a gift! One danger about this is instead of us wanting to be a blessing to someone, we are expecting someone to be a blessing to us! The surest way to get disappointed this coming Christmas is to focus on what you are getting! By the way, Christmas is all about God GIVING us His only begotten Son!

3. Christmas is all about us!

Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Matthew 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

When we forget the real meaning of Christmas, it becomes all about us. When our employer does not give a Christmas bonus, our requested days-off are not approved, or when we don’t get to buy the things that we are planning to get for ourselves. We have the tendency to think that this is not going to be a good Christmas! What has that got to do with Christmas?

The true reason why we celebrate Christmas is because of the birth of our Saviour and His name is Jesus! When Christmas becomes all about Christ, then He will become our priority. Christ will be the center of our Christmas. We will be faithful to the things of God. We will not miss church during the holiday season. We will not participate in anything that is not pleasing to Him! Whether or not we receive a Christmas bonus, get the things we always wanted to buy, or do the things we wanted to do this Christmas season. If we have the right attitude about it, Christmas will always be a special day for the child of God.

As we are enjoying all the festivities, fellowship, and food, don’t forget to take time to thank our Heavenly Father for sending the Lord Jesus Christ. Remember, the reason we get to enjoy Salvation is because of Christmas day!
