More to be Desired

Ray Pechardo
Psalm 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

Men put forth great effort and much time pursuing things that are far less valuable than wisdom. They will pursue an education, a career, wealth, hobbies, and other goals with much passion and costly investments. But ALL these things that they desire, even added together and combined, are less valuable than wisdom. The Bible says that wisdom is the principal thing. This is something that Christians are to be seeking after! Unfortunately, what is often neglected is where wisdom comes from: the Word of God. Until we realize the great necessity it has in our life, we will not really value it the way we should.

Here are some things that will help us to value the Word of God more:

1. Know what it can do for us.

Psalm 19:7-8 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. v.8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.

God’s Word provides us the knowledge necessary for salvation! Aren’t you glad that we have the Bible to show us how our sins can be forgiven? It shows us the ONLY way to heaven, and it gives us the formula to live an abundant life here on earth. Just imagine traveling to a place without any map or GPS! It would probably be a difficult trip, to say the least. With the light of God’s Word, we don’t have to go through life wandering.

2. Realize the warnings are for our own good.

Psalm 19:11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

One of the things that I really appreciate about God’s Word are the warnings it gives us. The warnings are there to help us, not to hurt us. It is when we ignore the warning that we get into trouble. Just as there are warning signs on the streets and highways to keep people safe, the Word of God gives us clear warnings to prevent major disasters in life!

3. Understand all the benefits.

Psalm 19:11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

There are so many benefits in keeping God’s Word. The truths that we learn from God’s Word will give us wisdom to make right choices. Wrong choices have bad consequences and right choices bring blessings! The more we make the right choices, the more blessed our life will be.

What would make someone like Job say in Job 23:12, “Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food”? Or the Psalmist to say in Psalm 119:72, “The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver”? Maybe they had experienced the benefits from acquiring wisdom that only comes from the Word of God.
