Looking unto Jesus

Ray Pechardo
Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

God has a plan and purpose for every Christian. It is up to us to seek out HIS plan and purpose in our lives. God’s plan and purpose for us is to live a committed, abundant, and victorious Christian life! He wants us to experience a life that is full of victories, living by faith, and completely dependent on Him. Just like God did not promise a smooth road for the Israelites to the Promised Land, there will be times when we will hit some bumps and detours, but He wants us to keep going and not to go backward! The key to going forward in the Christian life is keeping our eyes on Jesus.

Here are a few thoughts on why we should keep our eyes on Jesus:

1. To remember where the blessings come from.

1 Timothy 6:17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;

James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

If we are not careful, it is very easy to fall into the trap that we deserve all the blessings that we are enjoying. We might think that because we worked hard, or because of our own ability and skills, we have all the things that we possess. We should work hard and use our God-given talents and ability, but it is God who gave us everything that we have!

2. To be thankful in everything.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

We live in a society filled with unthankful people! It seems like the more we have, the less we’re thankful. Christians ought not to be that way. Of course it is easy to be thankful during good times, but we still need to be thankful even during bad times. It’s easy to praise the Lord when we’re healthy, but how about when we’re sick? It’s easy to have a good attitude when everything is going well, but when everything is falling apart, what do we do? The Bible commands us to be thankful in everything and we can do that—by keeping our eyes on Jesus!

3. To help us not quit during the storms of life.

Proverbs 24:16 For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again.

Matthew 14:29-30 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

We all wish that the Christian life will always be smooth sailing. We wish that there will not be any major problem to deal with. But the fact of the matter is, whether you are a Christian or not, we will all go through storms of life! What we all need to do is stay focused on Christ during the storm. No matter how bad the situation is, there’s always hope in Christ, and we can make it if we keep our eyes on Him.

4. So we can make it when we fall.

Numbers 21:8 And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.

Wrong choices always have bad consequences. There will be times when we’ll make mistakes. There will be times that we’ll make unwise decisions and let people down. During these times of failures and disappointments is when we really need to look up to the ONE that can heal and forgive. He knows and He cares!

5. So that we can encourage others.

Romans 15:1 We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.

Galatians 6:2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

As we continue to grow in our Christian life, we will make wise choices that will help us to avoid future regrets. As we mature spiritually, God wants us to help those who are spiritually weak. God helped us with our trials so we can help others. God is preparing us through trials to encourage others. Just like Christ came to serve and not to be served, our purpose is not so we can please ourselves, but to always look for opportunities to be a blessing and an encouragement to those who are struggling.

Galatians 6:10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
