Life’s Simple Pleasures

1 Thessalonians 2:19-20  For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming? For ye are our glory and joy.

In the world’s pursuit of happiness, they often neglect the things that give true satisfaction in life. People say, “If only it were this way, I would be happy,” or, “If only I had that, I would be content.”  In the meantime, they overlook all the little opportunities for happiness that God brings their way each day. It is not really the big things in life that we are looking for that give happiness. Life is filled with many simple pleasures if we would just take a closer look.

Here are some examples:
Full tank of gas
Finding a perfect parking spot out of the blue
A freshly made bed
Sleeping in
The first sip of your coffee
Finding money you forgot about
Hitting all green lights on the way home from work

Researchers at One Poll surveyed 6,000 adults in UK, US, Singapore and Australia to determine all the little things that bring joy. Over half polled believe they don’t get to enjoy life’s simplest pleasures often enough for their liking, while others feel they don’t have enough time in their day-to-day to take advantage of small pleasures as much as they should.

As Christians, God has also given us so many opportunities to enjoy simple pleasures of being a channel of blessing to someone. Whether helping someone in need, seeing someone get saved, or seeing someone serve the Lord faithfully: these are life’s simplest pleasures that we get to enjoy on a regular basis, and that no amount of money can ever pay for!

Nothing can be more satisfying than seeing someone trust Christ as their personal Saviour and take steps towards spiritual growth! Being a blessing to someone who cannot give anything in return, or blessing someone who is going through times of discouragement, can help make their day. How about that person that we invested in, prayed for earnestly, and had given our lives to train, care for, and mentor for Christ, who is now serving in fulltime ministry, or living for God and others! The Bible reminds us in 3 John 1:4, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.”

These are life’s simple pleasures that we as Christians get to enjoy and should live for—instead of the world’s endless pursuit of happiness that only brings vanity and vexation of spirit.
