It Is WHO You Know

Proverbs 29:26 Many seek the ruler's favour; but every man's judgment cometh from the LORD.

“It’s not what you know, but who you know” is a saying not only used in both business and government, but in everyday life.

For those who think that skills are more important than connections, consider a situation in which two undergraduates are hoping to get the last spot in a specific graduate school program. The first person has better grades than the second, but the second is best friends with the dean of admission's son. Who do you think will get that last spot? The right connections can help entrepreneurs take their businesses to the next level in many different ways.

However, as Christians, the Bible tells us that we should be careful not to seek the ruler’s (our boss, etc.) favor more that seeking God’s favor in our life.

Proverbs 29:26 Many seek the ruler's favour; but every man's judgment cometh from the LORD.

This is one of the reasons why so many Christians compromise whether in their work place or in their own personal life—because they want to please men for whatever personal gain more than they want to please God. They will sometimes do things which are questionable, miss church at the drop of a hat because of work, or because of family matters. The boss wants them to work overtime, or there’s a family gathering that they need to attend to avoid offending loved ones. Maybe, if we are not careful, we will tend to go out of our way to please others at the expense of neglecting God’s clear commands. We will have the tendency to trust earthly masters more than we trust our Heavenly Father.

I want to challenge us today; the Christian life should be all about pleasing God! We cannot please Him if we are disobedient to His commands. Living the Christian life is not always easy, but it is always the right thing to do. We should try to live a peaceable life by obeying our God-given authorities and by being a good testimony to the unsaved people. But let us be reminded that God is the One who is in charge! The Bible says in Psalm 75:7 But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another. If we would desire to seek His favor more than the earthly rulers favor in our lives, we can be assured that God will show Himself strong to those who please Him.

2 Chronicles 16:9 For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.
Proverbs 21:1 The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.
Proverbs 16:7 When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.
