Doing or Being

Nick Grande
Matthew 15:8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.

When I was in high school, I had an odd classmate that loved horses. She loved them so much that when she ran, she wanted to gallop like a horse. She would imitate horse sounds, and other horse mannerisms. No one denied or doubted her passion for horses; however, we all knew that no matter how hard she tried and no matter what she did, she would never be a horse.

You may have heard of a man known as the Lizard man. He did many things to his body to make himself appear as a lizard. Unfortunately, for him, regardless of his outward appearance he could not change who he really was. No matter what he did externally, it could not change who he internally.

God desires for every Christian to be transformed into the image of Jesus Christ. God did not intend for any human being to be conformed into the image of this world and its philosophy. However, we as Christians are presented with the following struggle:

1. We desire to conform to this world internally and externally.
2. We attempt to emulate the life of Christ externally by “doing” all the right things, but internally we are not “being” Christlike.

God does not desire a Christian robot that has all the right responses and actions but has no sincere relationship with Him. God desires a Christian who has a sincere internal desire and execution of His will for their lives. Not only going through the motions externally but doing things that please the Lord because that is who they really are on the inside. Not just a lip service but a service and outflow of the heart. Doing the things of Christ because they are striving to be like Christ.
