Being Fruitful

Ray Pechardo
Psalm 1:3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

God desires all of us to bear fruit!  He wants us to be fruitful in our walk with Him, in our relationship with others, and in our ministry. One of the signs of a healthy tree is having healthy fruit. A healthy Christian will grow, flourish, and produce fruit. The goal in the Christian life is to grow and bear much fruit.

Here are some practical thoughts to help us to become fruitful in 2021.

1. There are things we need to deny.

Psalm 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

Proverbs 4:14-15 Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. v.15 Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.

According to verse 1, there are three things we must deny if we want God’s blessing. First of all, the counsel of the ungodly! We must purposefully seek to avoid any influence of the world upon our life. Be very careful not to allow the media, social media, television, radio and hollywood to infiltrate your mind! Secondly, we must proactively separate ourselves from the way of sinners. Christians have no business going to places where sinners often congregate! Thirdly, we must predetermine not to place ourselves under the teaching of those who mock and scorn the things of God. The Bible commands us to learn not the way of the heathen. All these things will prevent us from being fruitful.

1 Corinthians 15:33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.

2. There are things we need to delight in

Psalm 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

The word delight in verse 2 has the idea of “taking pleasure in.” One of the joys of seeing a growing Christian is their desire to obey the Lord! They are filling their mind with God’s Word, and as a result are finding joy in living right and doing what is right. Just like a child delights in doing things that will please their father, a growing and fruitful Christian finds pleasure in pleasing God. By the way, the Bible gives us specific instructions on how we can live a life that is pleasing to our Heavenly Father. Though there are many things in life in which we might delight, God has promised blessings for those who truly delight in His Word. A good question to ask is, “How is our delight in the law of the Lord?”

3. There are things we’ll get to discover!

Psalm 1:3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

There are five promises that are mentioned in verse 3.

• A strong foundation that is not easily shaken!
And he shall be like a tree planted…

• Unlimited resource of blessings!
…by the rivers of water,

• Always bearing fruit!
…that bringeth forth his fruit in his season;

• A living testimony of God’s goodness!
…his leaf also shall not wither;

• God’s favour upon our life!
…and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

Those are precious promises to every Christian who will deny the world and delight in God’s Word! God desires all of us to bear fruit, and I want to please my Heavenly Father by bearing much. This year, I hope and pray that we will all do our best to be the Christians that God would want us to be, by being fruitful!
