Joshua 1:1-9 Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' minister, saying, Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel. Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast. There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
The meter and gauge by which the world measures success is quite a bit different from God’s. This world measures success in terms of wealth, popularity, and power. God’s idea of success is for a person to live for Him. For example:
• Noah was a failure in the eyes of the world, but by God’s standard he was successful.
• Enoch’s name is not even considered when the names of successful men are mentioned, but he pleased God, and it paid him rich dividends.
Hebrews 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated so as not to see death, and he was not found, because God transposed him; and before he was transposed, he had testimony of having pleased God.
According to the world’s standards, Jesus was not a success but a failure during His time here on earth. At the end of His life, He cried out from the cross, "It is finished.", so it must have been a success, Though, by human standards, His ministry at that point would have been judged as a failure.
Today, what we must consider is the biblical definition of success. In other words, "What does God consider to be a success?" If it is not about wealth, popularity or power, what is success in God's eyes?
The question that each one of us must ask ourselves is: "How can I succeed in my Christian life when there are so many obstacles and tests to overcome?
The people have crossed the desert, Moses has died, and now Joshua is the new leader, who has the task of taking the people to the Promised Land. On the way, there are pagan people, ready to tear them down and keep them from reaching the Promised Land. The advice of God for Joshua:
Joshua 1:6-7 Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. Only be thou strong and very courageous,
Joshua 1:9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
Three times God tells Joshua to be STRONG, to obey God, and to be faithful to God. Sadly Christians today want success without the EFFORT. There is no success in the things of God and there are no miracles from God for those who do NOT strive to seek Him. You can have material things and think that it what it takes to be successful, but it will never compare to God's success.
Look at what God thinks of people who think like this:
Revelation 3:14-18 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
The Christians of Laodicea considered themselves successful because they claimed to be rich, and because they did not need anything, but in God's sight they were wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.
Why? Because they lived thinking that having everything in this world is having material things.
Today, if you, as a child of God, really want to be a successful person, LIVE FOR CHRIST.
2 Timothy 2: 1-2 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
We will never be a successful Christian in the eyes of God unless we push ourselves to be faithful to God.
Joshua 1: 6-9 Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. 7 Only be thou strong and very courageous, Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
Three times God tells Joshua to BE OF GOOD COURAGE
COURAGE is not the absence of fear. It is having personal control in the midst of fear.
For many, fear is what stops them from succeeding.
1 Samuel 17:11 When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid. vs45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
Fear stopped Saul and his army from receiving a victory. However, for David, fear did not stop him. By the way, David was not a superman! He just did not let fear control, paralyze, or stop him.
Hudson Missionary Taylor in China said, “God does not need strong men to do his work, but men weak enough to depend on the strength of God to do great things for God.”
Courage is also faith.
# 3 A SUCCESSFUL CHRISTIAN IS A CHRISTIAN WHO LIVES IN THE WORD
Joshua 1: 8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
Let me say something very important:
Strength and courage are two things that weaken easy in trials without the right food to sustain it and that food is the Word of God. The success of the men of Faith, their efforts, and their courage, came because they had something in common, they were people who lived in the Word of God.
The source of courage, effort, and strength, will always be the Word of God.
• SPEAK THE WORD: “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth”
• STUDYING THE WORD: "But thou shalt meditate therein day and night,”
• SUBMIT TO THE WORD - "That thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein:”
Psalm 119:130 The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.
IT’S FOOD FOR THE SOUL. Someone said: "The Bible should be bread for our daily use, not just cakes for special occasions."
THE POWER OF THE WORD
Hebrews 4: 12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Let us not make the mistake of making any move, or taking any action, unless we have gone to God and gotten some counsel about it.
A biblical template I use and that I have been taught when it comes to proving my music.
