A Politician Christian

Pastor Meyers
Philippians 2:5-8 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross..

If we are honest, we have a really hard time trusting and believing in our politicians. Over the course of the history of our country, and especially in the last year, this has been especially true. One of the things that makes it hard for us to trust and follow them is when they display hypocrisy. Those who set the rules feel that they do not have to keep those very rules.

How many times during this Covid lockdown have we seen in the news politicians violating the very policies they got up and told their constituents to follow. Telling them not to travel at this time, and then they go and travel. Shutting down businesses, and yet keeping their own businesses up and running. Telling us not to go to restaurants or hair salons, and then going to a restaurant and a hair salon. Telling us to always wear our masks, and then they don't wear a mask. The very ones that were voted into serve, more often than not are the ones being served.

Although this type of hypocrisy has always been true, it has been much more evident recently. But in our verses in Philippians 2 we read of a Leader of whom this was not true. And we are told as His followers to have this same type of mentality. Of course, the Ruler of which I speak is our Lord Jesus Christ. As a man, the God man, Jesus was willingly obedient to the Word of God. He who is the King of Kings humbly and willingly took the form of a servant, serving his creation. In fact, He followed the Word of God in a humble way, even to the point of sacrificing Himself for our sins on the cross. You would be hard pressed to find any politician with that kind of humility, servant spirit, or who would show that type of sacrifice. Jesus was definitely not like the politicians who make the rules but who feel that they do not need to keep them.

But this isn't about politicians, it is about us. It is about Christians, those who are to be obedient followers of Christ. The point of the passage is not just about what Jesus did, it's that He is our example of how and with what spirit we are to live. You see the directives of Word of God is not optional for us. As Jesus was humble and obedient to the will of God as set forth in the word of God, so too should we. None of us are exempt from following the precepts and commands of the Word of God.

As it made sense for the One who was the Word of God to follow the Word of God, so too does it make sense for His followers to do the same. In following the Word of God, Jesus is not asking us to do something that He Himself did not do. The point is this: let's not be a politician Christian. Feeling that we are above obeying and following any of the commands and principles of the Word of God. Let us, like the Saviour, with a humble spirit and a servant attitude, submit ourselves to the Word of God.
